Joyce Beatty raised nearly $107,000 in December in the 3rd Congressional District race and had the second-highest amount of cash on hand among four Democratic candidates, according to her campaign-finance filing.
Her report, filed yesterday, shows she had almost $100,000 in the bank as of Dec. 31. She reported loaning $25,000 to her campaign and making a $2,500 donation to it. She also received a $2,500 donation from Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee.
Until this week, Beatty was a senior vice president at OSU. She formerly was minority leader in the state House.
The new 3rd District is contained within Franklin County and heavily favors Democrats, making the March 6 primary crucial.
Former U.S. Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy's campaign said yesterday it had more than $155,000 on hand and raised more than $100,000 in the final three months of 2011. Beatty has been in the race for a shorter period of time than Kilroy.
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman is hosting a fundraiser for Beatty on Thursday.
The other two Democrats -- state Rep. Ted Celeste and Columbus Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson -- raised about $28,000 and $25,000, respectively.
